Ori + Rachel | Lincoln Park North Pond | Joe's Seafood

Why is North Pond one of the best places to propose in Chicago?

North Pond is one of those Chicago proposal spots that gives you a little bit of everything. You get the park, the water, the trees, and a beautiful view of the skyline in the background. In spring, it gets even better with blooming trees and fresh greenery around the pond.

It feels tucked away enough for a private moment, but it still has that classic Chicago look that makes the photos feel special. For Ori and Rachel’s proposal, the plan was to use the area outside of North Pond Restaurant, overlooking the water with the city behind them.

Ori already had North Pond in mind, so I helped with the exact placement, timing, and approach to make sure the view worked well and the surprise stayed hidden.

How did Ori plan the surprise proposal at North Pond?

Ori planned the proposal around a real dinner plan, which is one of the easiest ways to make a proposal feel natural. They were already heading out for dinner, so making their way through Lincoln Park did not feel suspicious.

As they came up from the rideshare drop-off point, I was hidden around the corner of North Pond Restaurant, just out of sight. Once they made their way to the spot overlooking the pond, Ori took Rachel by the hands and proposed with the Chicago skyline behind them.

Rachel was completely shocked and so happy. She could not believe this was actually the day.

What time of day is best for a North Pond proposal?

For this proposal, we planned everything around golden hour, about an hour before sunset. This gave us soft light for the proposal itself, plus enough time afterward for portraits around North Pond before heading to the next surprise.

Golden hour is one of my favorite times for proposal photos in Lincoln Park because the light feels softer, the pond photographs beautifully, and the skyline has a little more warmth in the background.

Where can you take portraits after a North Pond proposal?

After the proposal, we spent about half of the coverage time taking portraits around North Pond. We used the pond, the blooming spring trees, North Pond Restaurant, and the skyline in the background.

This is one of the reasons North Pond works so well for proposals. You do not have to travel far to get variety. Within a short walk, you can get romantic park photos, water views, city views, and a few photos that feel a little more tucked away and private.

How can you plan a proposal with a second surprise after?

This is where Ori’s plan got even better. After the proposal and portraits, I pretended like our session was done. But really, the next part of the plan was already in motion.

I took a Lyft over to Joe’s Seafood, where Ori had family waiting in a private back room for a celebration dinner. Joe’s was the real dinner plan, but Rachel had no idea that their family and parents had come in from out of town to celebrate with them.

Her reaction when she walked in and saw everyone was priceless. She was already surprised from the proposal, and then she got surprised all over again.

How much proposal photography coverage do you need if family is involved?

If you are planning a proposal with family nearby or a celebration dinner afterward, extended coverage can make a huge difference. For Ori and Rachel, the extended session gave us enough time to photograph the proposal, portraits around North Pond, travel time, and the family reveal at Joe’s Seafood.

That extra coverage helped the story feel complete. Instead of only having photos of the proposal itself, they also had photos of the family reveal, hugs, candids, group photos, and a champagne toast with everyone who helped make the day special.

What was it like photographing a windy spring proposal in Chicago?

Chicago is going to Chicago, so wind can always be part of the plan. North Pond is beautiful in the spring, but like many outdoor proposal spots in the city, it helps to stay flexible.

We worked with the wind during portraits, and I helped clean up a few flyaway hairs with some editing magic afterward. You do not need everything to be perfect for the photos to feel beautiful. You just need a plan that gives the moment room to happen.

Is Joe’s Seafood a good place to celebrate after a proposal?

Joe’s Seafood worked perfectly for Ori and Rachel’s celebration because it was already part of the real dinner plan. The private room made it easy for family to stay hidden until the right moment, and it gave everyone a place to celebrate right after the proposal.

For this part of the evening, I photographed the reveal, family candids, group photos, and a champagne toast. Those photos added so much to the full story because you can see the surprise, the joy, and everyone finally getting to celebrate together.

How do I help plan North Pond proposals?

For proposals like this, I help with more than just showing up with a camera. I help figure out the exact spot, where you should stand, how to approach the location, how to keep the surprise hidden, and how much time you may need for portraits, travel, or a celebration afterward.

For Ori, that meant helping with the placement at North Pond, planning the golden hour timing, and coordinating how to split the coverage between the proposal, portraits around the pond, travel time, and the family dinner reveal at Joe’s Seafood.

If you are visiting Chicago, planning around dinner reservations, or trying to include family in the surprise, I can help map out the flow so the whole thing feels simple and easy.

Thinking about proposing at North Pond?

North Pond is a great proposal location if you want something scenic, romantic, and still very Chicago. It works especially well if you want skyline views without being in the middle of a crowded downtown spot.

If you are planning a North Pond proposal, I can help with location ideas, timing, exact placement, easy posing direction, and coverage that fits the full story, from the proposal to the celebration after.
